Formaldehyde (CH2O) or methanal is a highly toxic gas used extensively in a vast range of industries. It is an organic compound which is the simplest of aldehydes. It is mainly produced via the vapour-phase oxidation of methanol and is sold as formalin which is a 37 percent aqueous solution. It is naturally produced by all types of organisms, including plants, bacteria, fish, animals and humans, as part of cell metabolism.
Formaldehyde appears to be a colourless, combustible chemical gas at room temperature. It has a strong smell. It is readily soluble in water. Due to it being poisonous, its regular exposure could lead to health problems like cancer. It has excellent preservatives and antibacterial properties.
The chemical finds application in building materials along with producing several household products, which is primarily driving the market growth. It is used to make pressed-wood products including in plywood, particleboard, and fiberboard. It is also used to make adhesives and glues; paper product coatings; permanent-press fabrics; and some insulation materials which further boosts its market demand.
In addition, it is an industrial germicide, fungicide, and disinfectant. It works as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories, which gives a further push to its demand in the medical industry. It also finds application in cosmetics and everyday products like dishwashing liquids and fabric softeners. Also, it's employed to make fertilizers and pesticides, which is further increasing its market's growth rate.
Along with that, it is extensively used in the automobile sector for making vehicles lighter and more energy efficient. Its resins are employed to make interior moulded components as well as under-the-hood components that have the ability to withstand high temperatures. These parts are used to produce highly durable exterior primers, tire-cord adhesives, clear coat paints, brake pads and fuel system components which further bolsters its industry expansion.

Formaldehyde is used in making urea-formaldehyde resins, which in turn are used to make fibre-board wood products (e.g., MDF); in other adhesive products (e.g., as might be used in producing wind turbine blades); and in smaller quantities to produce paints and disinfectants.
We think marginal cost of producing formaldehyde in normal times is around $500/ton (of pure formaldehyde), although the costs are a direct linear function of gas prices.
Total embedded CO2 is around 0.75tons/ton of formaldehyde (again on a 100% basis), of which c90% is embedded in producing methanol as a chemical input.
