During cooler weather (March, April, and early May), ester formulations can be used safely, and typically provide better weed control than amines. In warmer temperatures, amines and esters have about the same effect on weed control. Some esters are also "hot", and can injure grasses when temperatures are too warm. Most herbicide labels list a temperature range in which they should be used, so be sure to follow these recommendations.

  2. What is the weed pressure in the region?
    In addition to weed pressure in the surrounding fields, consider weed pressure throughout the local geography. The prevalence of resistant weeds grows every year, so agronomists and Extension agents are great resources to learn more about the prevalence of specific species in a region, so you can build a weed management program that helps address current and potential threats to your crop.
  3. What type of weather does the field typically experience?
